Communities Creating Healthy Environments     Current Events
The youth criminalization-childhood obesity connection is a strong yet often ignored one. Safe Streets / Strong Communities aims to bring recreation access equity to New Orleans by demanding justice reinvestment; a redistribution of public resources away from policing and incarceration toward life affirming community resources like parks, playgrounds, swimming pools and recreation programs.

SSSC wants to see renovation and staffing of existing community based recreation facilities and building of safe, accessible, well-staffed modern community recreation centers.

Currently, SSSC and community members are fighting the Orleans Parish Sheriff's plan to build a 5,800 bed jail in the middle of New Orleans and are preparing a response to the city's move to replace the New Orleans Recreation Department (NORD) with a semi-autonomous public-private partnership, to operate the city's parks and recreation facilities.

SSSC is demanding that the City of New Orleans invest in its young people — not arrest them.

Our Vision

We envision a world where ALL communities are safe & strong; a world where...
  • public resources are not squandered on prisons and instruments of social control but instead are invested in children and families in the form of sound affordable housing and in quality education for every child to the highest level that each wishes to attain.

  • all people have equal opportunity to participate in the economy in a meaningful way and to share in the nation's wealth.
