Decriminalization of Culture Campaign     Current Events
In the fall of 2010, Soros Justice Advocacy Fellow, Alison McCrary will begin her new initiative at Safe Streets/Strong Communities, Decriminalization of Culture Campaign: Revitalizing the Right to Culture in New Orleans. The initiative will focus on helping members of New Orleans' Mardi Gras Indian Tribes and the Social Aid and Pleasure Clubs to lawfully resist infringement on their rights by officers of N.O.P.D. This project responds to pressure from certain New Orleans quarters to push the Mardi Gras Indians and 2nd-Line performers, who have endured as key elements of New Orleans' cultural motive for over 100 years, to the margins of the city's cultural landscape.

Our Vision

We envision a world where ALL communities are safe & strong; a world where...
  • public resources are not squandered on prisons and instruments of social control but instead are invested in children and families in the form of sound affordable housing and in quality education for every child to the highest level that each wishes to attain.

  • all people have equal opportunity to participate in the economy in a meaningful way and to share in the nation's wealth.
